Tonight, President Barack Obama will give his final national address before the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump on January 20. Following a rise in approval numbers during his final year, the president will seek to communicate hope to Democrats and progressives across the country before leaving office.

Eschewing the White House for his hometown of Chicago, President Obama will speak in front of a sold-out audience. Aides close to the president have stated that the speech will focus on how the Democratic party and its allies can best move their policies forward in the next administration.

Obama administration officials have gone on record saying that the speech will be “forward-looking” and will cap off a final year in office that saw many progressive victories despite the Democrats’ national defeat in November. President Obama, aides say, has developed at least four drafts of his farewell speech over the last few months.
